The Benefits of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

During my first pregnancy, I did not take vitamins that contain folic acid as my OB didn’t tell me to do so. However, I tried to eat foods that are rich in folic. Now, for the second time, I am conceiving our second child and I will be staying here in Philippines throughout this pregnancy until I gave birth to our second boy. I am 18 weeks pregnant, and during my 1st trimester the very first vitamins that my OB prescribed me was folic acid which I didn’t experience with my first pregnancy.

I was told that folic acid should be taken during the first trimester as it helps in the brain development of the baby. It prevents neural tube defects such us spina bifina and anencephaly which is a condition where the brain is not properly form.

Folic acid or folate is Vitamin B that produces cells including red blood cells. It reduces neural tube defects which help develop the brain. It can also prevent pregnancy complications, pre-mature birth, miscarriage and child birth defect like cleft lip and palate. Folic is also helpful to non pregnant women for it helps lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and other types of cancer.

During pregnancy, it is important to take folic acid on the first to fourth week of pregnancy because during that stage, the baby’s brain and spine are developing. Even if you are not pregnant it is advisable to take folic acid during your child bearing age as this will protect our own health.
