Zoe is Learning to Read

One of our goals this school year, is for our Zoe to learn reading before the end of fourth quarter. He learned phonics from his nursery class last year and refreshed him this year to eventually master it. We recently started the Learn to Read program of Starfall.com, it’s a free phonics based program online for parents, educators and homeschoolers. Now, Zoe can read short vowels sound and slowly learning long vowels sound.

Before we started phonics, we used to read books before bed time. Our reading time together has also helped him learn the ropes to reading. Through this routine, my children specially our youngest has develop a love for reading and started to love books. There are times when we would read almost past bed time, because they want to read more books, and that sometimes requires true effort for me, to stay awake and read even if my eyes wants to turn in and hit dream land.

Currently, Zoe is slowly learning to read and everyday I noticed improvement on his reading skills.

Reading with Dr. Seuss

One of our goals in our first year of homeschooling is for Zoe to be able to read 4 to 5 letters word by the end of 3rd quarter. I’m glad that lately our boys were fascinated by Dr. Seuss stories. Our budding readers would grab the books whenever we hit the bed, and I would read until they fall asleep. Reading together is one of the precious time I love with my boys.

Exposing children to books at an early age will help them familiarize with sounds and words and eventually will boost their interest with books. It stimulate their immagination and eventually build literacy .

Currently we have a few collection of Dr. Seuss’ books. They love The Cat in the Hat and also want to build a circus mcgurcus from If a ran a Circus.

Homeschooling from a First Time Homeschooler

When we started Homeschooling (last month), I thought I’ll just have to bring the conventional school teaching style at home. But after attending the Homeschool 101 of TMA where we are affiliated, it gave me a wider & better perspective of what and why we are Homeschooling.

Learning the 3 main parts of the body

As I learn the ropes of Homeschooling, I have come to understand that:

Homeschooling is intentional parenting. I strongly believe that as parents we should be the one to teach and train our children thoughtfully and willfully, teaching them to Love God and directing them to a relationship with Jesus and glorifying God at the same time. Choosing Homeschooling is a tough decision, it takes a lot of courage to go against the flow of the society. Sure, there will be apprehensions not just from family friends, but even your own family. It could be a lot easier if wehave sent our child to school, as one person told me, “nagbayad ka na nga ng mahal, mag eefort ka pa magturo”. And that I think is what intentional parenting is, not doing what is easiest at the moment, but doing what’s best for your children.

Homeschooling is a heartwork. I once heard the phrase “we should school the heart” . As a homeschool parents, we should teach and set our heart right. Our mindset should reflect what’s in our heart.

Just this morning as I prepare for our homeschooling, our youngest was wailing over the scissor. He wanted to play with it which I haven’t allowed of course. Then the eldest wrenched off one of the art materials, that made me more agitated. I cringed and raised my voice and almost pinched him on the face. When I saw him staring at me teary eyed, I felt guilty. Right there, I know I was not being a good model. How could I raise my voice and hurt my child while I teach him to love God. Then I was reminded to practice more patience, admit to my kid that I was wrong, hugged him and asked forgiveness. It really is a heartwork for me.

As we, the parents set our heart right, we should also learn how to see and speak to our children’s heart. The, next thing to the heart should be the behavior. Remember that our child’s behavior is the outward manifestation of what’s inside the heart.

learning creation

I’d like to quote from the book of Proverbs 4:23 “Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life consequences.” God has given us (parents) the Authority over our children. We are accountable to God and responsible for shaping the hearts of our children. It’s not an easy job, guess all parents will agree. But as long as we continue to walk with God, we will not get tired of doing such a tough job. The same thing applies to our children. We should also teach the little ones to the concept of staying within God’s Blessing. Training them as they grow will equip them towards true success. Just remember that training or discipline should be age appropriate. Proverbs 22:6 says Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Homeschooling is morethan just textbook. While academics are equally important, I think the very heart of homeschooling is teaching our children to love God, teaching them to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to develop a Christ-like attitude. Once we impart those of our children, I think a teachable and obedient heart wouldn’t be impossible. On the other hand, what I like about homeschooling is you can customize the curriculum and adjust to your child’s learning style. Plus, you can also do hands-on activities like crafts, nature study, music and art as part of their learning.

These are just few of I think many benifits of homeschooling. This is only our first year, and I believe there’s more to learn for my family.
